How can this help you the parent?
I am sure you were thinking to yourself, how is this blog going to help me the parent with my kindergarten kid and this common core business. It is my intention to turn this blog into a resource for parents. I would like for parents to come here to search for ideas and activities to support and extend learning in the classroom. The classroom is changing and what was being done last year is now new and different this year. Students were once sitting on the carpet being taught and they are now moving about the classroom exploring and learning. As they once sat and watched the teacher control the mouse on the computer, they are in charge of that mouse and applications. The world has come to the kindergarten classroom and the students are looking for ways to learn and be active. This week in my classroom we have explored ABC Mouse, Starfall, and a few Promethean board games. We have played a new subetizing game in math and explored the listening and pocket chart center. Kindergarten is a busy and exciting place and we are learning more everyday!

Michele,
ReplyDeleteI think that your blog is great in explaining the changes in Kindergarten. I think that as education continues to change, our concepts of what happens in Kindergarten change. I remember when I was in Kindergarten, we were able to go for a half day and it was a lot of coloring and learning our letters. The full day students were able to take a nap. Now, Kindergarten is required to be full day, there is no nap time and teachers are concerned if you don't know your alphabet. It is also much more accepted for students (at least in my area) to go to Pre-School and Pre-Kindergarten. It will be interesting to see how things continue to change in the future!
Michele,
ReplyDeleteAs I mentioned in my response to your other post, I think that this blog is wonderful. I have a son in kindergarten and am always curious about what he does all day. All he tells me is that he moves around to different areas of the room and has recess. I think those are his favorite parts of the day so that is what he tells me. The explanation you gave about the students moving around the classroom helps me understand his explanantion of his day. Along with your description, it is good to see that you seem to be successful with common core. I found a video that you might like. It is about Common Core and Kindergarten. I hope you like it.

Your second blog post does a great job introducing the objectives of the blog to the parents. You listed some of the ways the blog may benefit the parents and what they should expect from the blog. If I were a parent I would be happy to read the blog post. You come across as a very caring teacher and you have given them a small dose of what they should expect from the blog in the future. (i.e. ABC Mouse, Starfall, and a few Promethean board games) Very good second post.
